In 2016-2017, Kiwi Energy achieved carbon neutrality for its operations and energy supply with its eco-minded products. As outlined in the company’s latest Sustainability Report, customers using Kiwi Energy’s electricity product helped offset 392,122 Metric tons of Carbon Dioxide emissions and customers using their natural gas plan helped offset 321,528 Metric tons of CO2 emissions.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities in the United States is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. Electricity production generates the second largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 68 percent of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, mostly coal and natural gas. Offsetting electricity with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and natural gas consumption with Carbon Offsets are great mechanisms for helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2017, the average annual electricity consumption for a U.S. residential utility customer was 10,399 kilowatthours (kWh). With a population of approximately 8,622,698 (averaging in 2.67 persons per household), if all 3,229,474 New York City households offset their energy consumption, we would be able to avoid 4,141,409 tons of emissions caused by homes’ electricity usage for one year. That’s the equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 27,950,089 acres of U.S. forests in one years; 1,036,191,119 trash bags of waste recycled instead of landfilled; and greenhouse gas emissions from 58,064,704,810 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.
Throughout the next year, Kiwi Energy will continue to focus on providing customers eco-conscious energy and natural gas solutions. Its product offering will include an energy plan that’s matched 100% with Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificated (RECs) sourced from national wind as well as a natural gas plan that’s 100% matched with Green-e Climate Certified carbon offsets. These are purchased to ensure that the carbon emissions caused by a customer’s gas usage is offset from projects that encourage forestry.
In the United States, ten regional electronic REC tracking systems facilitate the creation, management, and retirement of RECs by ensuring that each REC is counted only once. Kiwi Energy uses the ERCOT tracking system to verify its RECs; and to verify its carbon offsets, APX and Green-e Climate. Additionally, Kiwi Energy’s products are Green-e Certified. Green-e is a trusted global leader in REC and carbon offset certification. Green-e certification helps consumers and businesses make educated choices to reduce their environmental impact from electricity and natural gas consumption. In addition to third- party verification, Green-e provides marketing oversight and consumer protection assurances.
